The Medical Science of Naegele's Rule
Obstetricians calculate gestational due dates using Naegele's Rule (introduced by German obstetrician Franz Karl Naegele in 1812 and endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)):
Estimated Due Date = First Day of LMP + 280 Days (40 Weeks) + (Cycle Length − 28 Days)
Gestational age is measured from the first day of the last menstrual period, meaning at conception (fertilization), the pregnancy is already clinically dated at approximately 2 weeks.
