Understanding Dynamic Viscosity
Dynamic (absolute) viscosity ($\mu$ or $\eta$) measures a fluid's internal resistance to flow under an applied tangential shear force:
- Newton's Law of Viscosity: $$\tau = \mu \frac{du}{dy}$$
- SI Unit: $1\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s} = 1\text{ N}\cdot\text{s/m}^2 = 1\text{ kg/(m}\cdot\text{s)}$.
- CGS Unit: $1\text{ Poise (P)} = 0.1\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s}$, and $1\text{ Centipoise (cP)} = 0.001\text{ Pa}\cdot\text{s} = 1\text{ mPa}\cdot\text{s}$.
