MAC Address Architecture (IEEE 802)
A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a $48\text{-bit}$ hardware address composed of 6 octets:
- OUI (Octets 1–3): Assigned by the IEEE Registration Authority to identifying hardware manufacturers.
- NIC Specific (Octets 4–6): Assigned by the vendor uniquely to each individual network interface controller.
- Individual / Group (I/G Bit): Bit 0 of octet 1 dictates Unicast ($0$) vs Multicast ($1$).
