How Electricity Bills Are Calculated
Electric utility companies bill consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kilowatt-hour equals 1,000 Watts of power sustained continuously for one hour:
Energy (kWh) = (Power in Watts × Operating Hours) / 1,000
Cost ($) = Energy (kWh) × Rate per kWh
Cost ($) = Energy (kWh) × Rate per kWh
Example: Running a 1,500W space heater for 4 hours a day at an average rate of $0.16/kWh consumes $(1500 \times 4) / 1000 = 6\text{ kWh/day}$, costing $6 \times \$0.16 = \$0.96\text{ per day}$ ($\$28.80/\text{month}$).
